It has just come to my attention that the Warrior Whey Protein that is sold by Defense Nutrition sells actually contains phenylalanine.  Isn't this the same stuff that's in sugar-free chewing gum  Huh

Of course it does!
Phenylalanine is one of the 20 essential amino acids that make up all proteins in nature.  People with phenylketonuria PKU lack the enzyme to metabolize phenylalanine, and thus must avoid protein almost entirely or risk toxic build-up of phenylalanine.

Aspartame metabolizes into phenylalanine, so people w/ PKU also should not consume aspartame, and any food that contains aspartame must have that standard "contains phenylalanine" warning on it.

So would you say aspartame is safe to consume?  Or is aspartame different from phenylalanine?

Aspartame is poison in my estimation.  I wouldn't consume it.
