Walking is very good for healthy life. But using your walk efficiently is most important part of exercise.

Try this,
 - Walk an extra mile, if you go at a 4 MPH speed it will take only 15 minutes.

 - Speed up. Walk for the same amount of time you usually do, but go a half-mile per hour faster.

 - Kick it into high gear. Slip in a 3/4-mile run before or after your walk.

Speed walking can be even better than jogging. I was surprised how sore I was when I tried it one day. I walked for about 40 minutes and that was all it took. Most people can do that at the gym while watching TV no problem.

Walking is unquestionably one of the most underrated forms of exercise. With that in mind, I'd like to add another suggestion to anu77's list.

Keeping an even pace, concentrate upon your breathing. Employ a cycle of four 'breaths,' beginning at two steps each. With practice, increase the number of steps, keeping them the same for each of the four.

1. Inhale
2. Hold the inhalation
3. Exhale
4. Hold the exhalation (don't inhale right away)

You may be surprised at how demanding this can become, physically and mentally. At the very least, it is a good way to improve your concentration towards other pursuits.
