Water without plastic... recommendations?
«

I am pretty new. I have read some posts about issues with water in plastic containers. My family and I buy cases upon cases of Spring Water in plastic gallon containers from Earth Fare ("Health" themed grocery store). Our family of four go thru about 1.5 gallons per day.
We try to avoid tap water. But, if we avoid Spring water in plastic containers, we do not have many choices. We do not live near a clean water source, and only water I see sold in glass containers are like $2 a quart. No way I could afford this, even if I could warehouse the 180 bottle per month we would need.
Any suggestions? Is Reverse Osmosis filter the best way to go?

I bought a water distiller and am very pleased that I did. It's paid for itself several times over.

A good water filter is definitely better than using tap or plastic bottled water in my opinion.

Charles,
Thank you for your help. May I ask why a distiller as opposed to Reverse Osmosis type of water purification?
Also, would you mind to tell me what brand of distiller you purchased?
Thanks again.

I don't know much about reverse osmosis. Someone who once sold them told me that they were not all that efficient and that it took more than one gallon of water to get one gallon of purified water. Whether that's true or whether he was blowing smoke, I don't know. I never bothered to check it out.
My disttler is a Waterwise 8800. I got it because they were having a special on them. And with a distiller, I know I'm getting the purest water available. Any type of filter would be better than tap but there could still be stuff left behind. Since I didn't research filters at all, I can't say for sure.
I had solicited info from a magazine ad for Waterwise and for a long time, I didn't purchase. But when I got the flyer about the sale, I figured it was time so I got one and am glad I did. I fact it is running at this very moment.

Hi all, first post here.
So firstly yes a water distiller is nice- good water but not sure as far as my evidence goes that it is completely purified. Still good though.
Secondly the reverse osmosis does take little while but hey clean pure water, okay devoid of its minerals but then rely on your food etc for those aye.
I use two filters, one attached to the tap for basic filtration then pour that into a Pi mag system which was a very nice filtering system thats more complex and mineralises the water.
That plastic concern is a nasty, if they see sunlight thats gonna release carconagins but yeah tough situation for you, I cant offer a solution idea as dont know your full living situation.
Something we are doing in the new year is a concrete/ mudbrick water tank that will house a glass or similar tank which can be filled by tap/ rain water with a filter machine on it.
ideally would like a commercial grade RO that works by solar/ wind.
Its about surviving the 21st century folks and water is the biggie.
Thanks for the opportunity to post.

Amen. I reuse glass tea bottles and refill them with water, green tea, or my home brewed kombucha (of which I am drinking some right now).
