I believe microwaves are health hazards and should be avoided. It is controversial though. There is lots of research you can read before you decide if you are willing to use one or not.

I've heard a good alternative is a convection oven. I do use a microwave on a rare occasion, but try to stay away from it if I can. But you're right, it is so easy and convenient, but as we all know from eating, that easy and convenient can certainly come back to haunt you.

All a microwave does is make the water molecules in the food vibrate so that it heats up. I can't imagine that it'll destroy or denature any nutrients unless you put it in for so long that the food overcooks and gets too much heat.

I'm with geronimo on this one. The myth that microwaves somehow radiate food probably spawned from very early microwaves using ionizing radiation (very high frequency, extremely damaging), whereas modern microwaves use non ionizing radiation (essentially the same as a telephone, t.v., the computer screen your looking at right now, etc.) This type of energy cant accumulate very well in much of anything, but it does cause water molecules to vibrate, thus generating heat.
Now, the main reason I dont use microwaves is because food just tastes better when its steamed or baked or cooked in some other way. Though I'll microwave eggs and make baked oatmeal in the microwave for convenience.
